Environmental Education in Wisconsin

Wisconsin Environmental Education Board

The Wisconsin Environmental Education Board (WEEB) was established by 1989 Wisconsin Act 299, becoming law in 1990. The WEEB was created to promote environmental education within all segments of society.

Since its inception, the board has been an active working group. In addition to operating an environmental grants program, the board is recognized as a consensus-building group on environmental education issues. The unique make-up and mission of the board position it to provide needed leadership to environmental education while recognizing the importance of building common purpose and direction among diverse community sectors and stakeholders.

News & Information

Wisconsin’s 2009-2011 budget included an amendment to increase funding for the Wisconsin Environmental Education Board’s (WEEB) grant program. Funding for the grant program comes from a surcharge on environmental fines. Once fully implemented, WEEB’s income for general EE grants will increase from an annual average of $90,000 per year to $252,000 per year.

The '07-'09 Wisconsin Environmental Education Board Biennial Report provides an overview of the projects made possible by WEEB financial support. The variety of projects is exciting and speaks to the importance of and need for environmental education literacy for all citizens of our state.
