The Wisconsin NCLI Coalition is working to develop an Environmental Literacy Plan for Wisconsin that will pay special attention to creating more opportunities to get kids outdoors and recommend a comprehensive strategy to ensure every child graduates with the environmental skills and knowledge needed to contribute to a sustainable future.

Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is developing a new activity guide for teachers to use to help teach kids about air quality during Clean Air Month (May). They are looking for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade teachers to pilot the activities with their classes in March and April of 2010.

The Environmental Education & Training Partnership (EETAP) published results of The Environmental Education Professional Development Needs and Priorities Study. Identified are 89 professional development needs for environmental educators, top priorities for the next 5 years (2010-2015), gaps in current offerings, and work needed to advance education for environmental literacy.

This eight day Institute designed primarily for 6-12 grade educators, will allow teams of teachers to explore bioenergy development use and applications, issues around biofuel sustainability, and development of inquiry-based classroom materials. The Bioenergy Institute is offered on the UW-Madison campus, June 22-25 through June 28-July 1, 2010. Limited spaces available. First come first serve.

The RET allows grade 6 -14 science or agriculture teachers to spend 6 weeks on the UW Madison campus June 21-July 30, 2010 to develop a classroom lab or activity related to bioenergy. RET participants work with their mentor scientist to learn about research techniques then collaborate with others to create a related activity that could be used in a school setting. Applications due February 28.

The Midwest Renewable Energy Association (MREA) is seeking qualified individuals to lead children’s workshops during the 2010 Energy Fair. Over 22,000 visitors are expected to come from around the world to learn about renewable energy and sustainable living practices. Interested individuals can create a workshop or choose from a variety of pre-determined activities. Connect with other environmental educators and advocates from around the world.

The Wisconsin Environmental Education Board (WEEB) relies on the expertise of individuals in a variety of professional disciplines (e.g., formal and non-formal education, business and industry, natural resource management) to assist in the selection of proposals submitted within its competitive grant program. Consider supporting environmental education in Wisconsin by serving as a reviewer. Apply by February 26, 2010.

Sign up for a Beautiful Butterfly program today. Every year, 30 days before Easter, Nichols Nature Sense orders a painted lady caterpillar kit to bring to your classroom for a program. The students will be able to view the caterpillars and I may be able to return in a few weeks for butterfly viewing. We will learn about the stages of metamorphosis through hands on learning, stories, and a simple craft.

The Wisconsin Environmental Education Board (WEEB) is seeking proposals for the 2010-2011 grant cycle. The Board anticipates awarding $115,000 for general environmental education grants, $190,000 for forestry grants, and $190,000 for school forest grants. Proposals are due February 13, 2010.

Wisconsin’s Arbor Day will be celebrated by schools Friday, April 30, 2010. The state nursery program provides 75,000 free tree seedlings to Wisconsin fourth grade students for this celebration. To obtain your seedlings, send an application by March 15, 2010.
