The UW-Milwaukee Great Lakes WATER Institute is the largest academic freshwater research facility on the Great Lakes.

EDUCATION/OUTREACH FOR K-12
The WATER Institute offers formal and informal outreach programming though its education arm, WATER Education Outreach, in partnership with UWM's School of Continuing Education. WATER Education Outreach has a team of dedicated freshwater and marine scientists, professional educators, and graduate students presenting outreach opportunities that advance science research.

WATER Education Outreach programs include:

The JASON Project - The JASON Project is an international science and technology program that focuses on scientists and students doing yearly research expeditions in the field via the Internet and Internet 2. For middle school teachers and scientific research.

Lake Sturgeon Bowl - The Lake Sturgeon Bowl is one of 25 regional competitions for the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB) competition. The Bowl is an academic tournament that provides a forum for students to excel in math and water sciences.The rapid-fire questions and answers are officiated by university and area scientists. Winners compete in the national finals and do research on Lake Michigan issues. Registration begins in October on a first-come basis, and training takes place in the fall. For high school students. Ocean Odyssey - The Ocean Odyssey recruits under-represented Milwaukee high school students and teachers to utilize a scaled approach to prepare for the Lake Sturgeon Bowl competition (see Lake Sturgeon Bowl), extend their knowledge of the Great Lakes and oceans, and provide actual fieldwork on Lake Michigan. For high school students.
