Mission
The initial goals of the CEDAR are to: 1. Increase and improve environmental education opportunities. 2. Foster and support interdisciplinary environmental research. 3. Demonstrate innovative, ecologically sound practices. 4. Build awareness of the Great Lakes ecosystem and connected watersheds.

Features
The CEDAR is located in the Historic Southport Beach House. The construction of the Southport Beach House began in 1936 under the federal Work Projects Administration (WPA). Bricks were recycled from the Bain Wagon Works factory in Kenosha, and the Chicago and Northwestern Depot in Racine. The The beach itself, formerly clay and rock, was encouraged in 1937 through the installation of eight concrete jetties that trapped sediment carried by lake currents. The CEDAR is also located just North of the Sand Dunes.
