Great Lakes Future LABS (Grades 3-12) Field Trips

Introduce your students to one of our most important issues facing our society: the equitable and sustainable management of freshwater. "Great Lakes Future" programs engage students in investigations of our water resources, especially the Great Lakes, the largest system of freshwater on our planet. Activities focus on water's chemical and physical properties, quality and quantity, availability and distribution, uses and history, as well as examine human impacts on freshwater systems highlighting issues facing the Great Lakes. Programs help students build a strong understanding of the dynamic role of water in their lives and the life of their community.

These programs are offered at Discovery World in Milwaukee, WI on the shores of Lake Michigan.edit Discovery World is a 120,000-square foot facility that includes interactive science, technology and freshwater exhibits, learning labs, theaters, television and audio studios, and fresh and saltwater aquariums.

Environmental Indicators and Water Quality Monitoring (Grades 9-12)
Participate in a comprehensive investigation of a freshwater ecosystem as you engage in water quality testing, organism identification, and environmental indicators used to assess the quality of a water system.

Tipping Point to Toxicity (Grades 7-12)
Learn how high toxicity levels and bio-magnification affect humans and the environment by studying toxins that pose problems in the Great Lakes. Students take part in simulated environmental investigation to pinpoint the source of pollution fouling an industrialized area.

What's in the Water (Grades 6-8)
Identify contaminants in water samples using chemical testing and monitoring methods. Introduces quality testing techniques and helps students understand what pollutants are in our water supply and their effect on our environment.

Great Lakes Most Unwanted (Grades 6-8) Learn what invasive species are, how they are introduced to the Great Lakes, and why they are unwanted. Students will observe preserved specimens and learn about the effet these invaders have on the Great Lakes ecosystem.
